Alesha Black is the director of the Global Food and Agriculture Program at the Chicago Council on Global Affairs. In this role she oversees research publications, public events on food security and nutrition, and represents the Council externally. From 2007 to 2015 she worked at the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation in multiple roles, ranging from strategic partnerships with bilateral governments and UN agencies to managing a grant portfolio working to connect smallholder farmers to better market opportunities in sub-Saharan Africa. Black also co-led internal activities to link nutrition and agriculture programs, developed the first gender strategy, and supported advocacy activities to raise the profile of smallholder agriculture globally. Black received her bachelor’s degree from the University of Arizona and her master’s from the Maxwell School at Syracuse University.

Alex Abell

Bob Saul

Bob has more than twenty years of direct investment experience in the agriculture and forestry asset class in the United States and Central America where he has been responsible for more than US$3 billion in land based transactions.

Prior to Fiera Comox, Bob was a Partner and founder at Grantham, Mayo, and van Otterloo’s Renewable Resources from 1997 to 2013. During this period, he built a 2.4 million-acre portfolio that included softwood and hardwood timberland, a wetland mitigation bank, row crop farmland, and processing infrastructure. The majority of these acres (1.6 million) were sold between 2006 and 2012. After 16 years at GMO, Bob joined Wood Creek Capital/Barings in early 2013 where he led agriculture investments, and over the next four and half years, assembled a US$600 million, 300,000 acre, agricultural and timber portfolio. This portfolio included three new operating platforms in citrus, maple syrup production, and ranchland to row-crop land conversion. The portfolio has also funded the expansion of existing operating platforms in row-crop farmland, water, teak, sorghum seed, and northern Appalachian hardwoods.

Bob has owned and managed his own 220-acre farm in Amherst, Massachusetts for 27 years. He is a graduate of Amherst College (B.A. English 1981) and Harvard’s Kennedy School of Government (MPP, 1985).

Dan DeBono

Chief Infrastructure Funding Officer, U.S. Department of Transportation

Dan is a financial executive with more than 20 years of experience in private sector finance. He began his career as a distressed debt trader at Goldman Sachs in New York in the 1990s, and subsequently served as an investment banker in positions of increasingly greater leadership, advising some of the world's largest media and telecommunications companies, and executing more than $25 billion of capital markets and merger & acquisition transactions globally. Dan went on to become an institutional investor, first at Wexford Capital, LP in Greenwich, Connecticut, and then at Elliott Management Corporation in New York, NY, where he invested capital on behalf of public pension funds, university endowments, and other institutions. Dan's responsibilities grew as he helped manage increasing amounts of capital, culminating in his senior leadership role in helping to manage several multi-billion investment portfolios for Elliott, where he was named a Portfolio Manager. Dan specialized in multi-strategy credit, and invested across industry, including media, telecommunications, energy, and transportation infrastructure. He invested in both developed and emerging markets globally. He departed Elliott in 2012 to spend more time with his young children and family.

Most recently, Dan ran a small investment and advisory business in New York before he returned to public service for the Trump Administration.

Dan is a 1990 graduate of Holy Cross College in Worcester, Massachusetts. He majored in mathematics. A personal connection to the military events in Panama in December 1989 inspired Dan to volunteer for the US Navy SEALs, where he was appointed Class Leader of his BUD/S training class. Dan completed one overseas tour during the Bosnian War, where he conducted joint training operations with NATO allies, among other things. He also specialized in special warfare submarine operations. Based in Madison, New Jersey, Daniel is responsible for the oversight and strategy in delivery of essential fund tax services across PGIM Real Estate globally. PGIM Real Estate is the real estate investment business of PGIM, Inc., the global investment management businesses of Prudential Financial, Inc. (NYSE: PRU).

Daniel started his career in real estate as a transactional attorney working on development deals in New York City before obtaining his master of business administration in Professional Accounting from Rutgers Business School. After Rutgers, Daniel joined the real estate tax group at Price Waterhouse Coopers and immediately prior to joining PGIM Real Estate, Daniel was a supervisor of the internal tax oversight team within the tax department of Vornado Realty Trust, one of the largest publicly held REITs in the United States, where he was responsible for supervision and oversight of tax return compliance.

Daniel has a bachelor of arts, magna cum laude, from Yeshiva University, a juris doctorate from Fordham Law School and a master of business administration in professional accounting from Rutgers Business School, where he received the Pruder Memorial Academic Award for graduating at the top of his class.

Monica Adractas

Monica leads Venture Capital for CPP Investments, based out of San Francisco. Monica joined CPP Investments in the fall of 2019 to launch the fund's global VC program. CPP Investments makes LP fund investments with leading VC managers, has a passive manager co-investment program, and also participates as a direct venture investor.

Monica has a track record of building, leading, and investing in high-growth tech environments. Monica is an initial founder of Workplace by Facebook, a standalone enterprise SaaS business that harnesses Facebook's consumer collaboration technology with over 30,000 enterprise and SMB customers. Prior to Facebook, Monica was at Box, where she was part of the 2015 IPO team and pioneered programs for industry-leading customer growth. Monica also experienced hyper-growth on the New Ventures team at Starbucks, executing long-term growth platforms via acquisition and partnerships.

Monica built her strategic and analytical foundation at McKinsey & Company, where she spent 10 years serving consumer and tech clients on growth strategy, go-to-market, and innovation.

Emma Haight-Cheng joined the Investment Team in the London office in March 2014. Ms Haight-Cheng is primarily responsible for sourcing, arranging and managing infrastructure debt investments in Europe and has over 13 years of infrastructure and energy finance and private equity experience. Prior to joining AMP Capital, Ms Haight-Cheng worked as Vice President of NIBC Bank NV’s Infrastructure and Renewables senior debt team and at Nur Energie SAS originating and executing renewable energy development and investment in France and North Africa. Ms Haight-Cheng is a UK qualified solicitor, qualifying into Allen & Overy’s Projects group in London, and brings significant additional energy structuring and arranging experience to the investment team. Over the course of her career, Ms Haight-Cheng has played a key role in structuring and arranging equity and debt finance across a range of market leading energy and infrastructure acquisition transactions. Ms Haight-Cheng is a qualified solicitor and holds a BA and MA(Oxon) from Oxford University.

James Haines

J.J. Haines is the Head of Global Real Estate Structured Debt at Aozora Bank. He is responsible for the bank’s ex-Japan real estate lending activity, which focuses on developed markets such as the United States, United Kingdom, Canada, and Australia. Prior to joining Aozora, he worked for Bank of America Merrill Lynch, where he was most recently Japan COO of Global Corporate & Investment Banking. Prior to BofAML, he worked in both real estate finance origination and risk management at Shinsei Bank. Mr. Haines began his career in sales and marketing at Hakuto Co., Ltd. Gordon Watson

Gordon Watson joined VPC in 2014 and is a Partner in New York. He is primarily responsible for sourcing, analyzing, executing and managing investments primarily within the financial services industry. Mr. Watson also actively works on making investments in public debt securities in middle market companies where VPC can seek to actively influence market companies. Mr. Watson is a member of the firm’s Investment Committee and currently serves on the board of directors of VPC portfolio company, Borro Ltd.

Previously, Mr. Watson was a portfolio manager focused on distressed debt at GLG Partners, a London-based 31 billion multi-strategy hedge fund that concentrates on a diverse range of alternative investments. He joined GLG when it purchased Ore Hill Partners, a credit focused hedge fund where Mr. Watson was a partner.
